Operator interfaces that allow monitoring and issuing
process commands, such as controller set point changes, are handled through the
SCADA computer system. Subordinate operations such as control logic or
real-time controller calculations are performed by interconnected modules
connected to field sensors and actuators.
SCADA concept
The SCADA concept was developed as a universal means of
remote access to a number of local control modules, which may be from different
manufacturers, and enabling access through standard automation protocols. In
practice, large SCADA systems have become very similar to distributed control
systems in function, using different methods of interfacing with operations.
SCADA
for equipment
They can manage large-scale processes that may involve
multiple locations and work over long distances as well as short distances. It
is one of the most commonly used types of industrial control systems, despite
concerns that SCADA systems are vulnerable to cyber warfare/cyber terrorist
attacks. Level 2 contains the SCADA for equipment status readings and reports
that are forwarded to the Level 2 SCADA as needed.
Machine Interface
The data is then compiled and formatted in such a way that a
control room operator using a Human Machine Interface (HMI) can make
supervisory decisions to modify or override normal RTU (PLC) control. Data can
also be fed into a historian, often built on top of a commodity database
management system, for trending and other analytical auditing. SCADA systems
typically use a tag database that contains data elements called tags or points
that relate to specific instrumentation or actuators.
Process
system
Within the process system, Data is collected based on these
unique references to process control device labels. Industrial processes
include manufacturing, process control, power generation, production and
refining and can run in continuous, batch, repetitive or discrete mode.
Infrastructure processes can be public or private, and include water treatment
and distribution, wastewater collection and treatment, oil and gas pipelines,
electricity transmission and distribution, and wind farms.
Scada
devices
Facility processes, including buildings, airports, ships and
space stations. They monitor and control heating, ventilation and air
conditioning (HVAC) systems, access and energy consumption. This is the core of
the SCADA system, it collects process data and sends control commands to
devices connected in the field.
Software
responsible
It refers to the computer and software responsible for
communicating with field connectivity controllers, such as RTUs and PLCs, and
includes HMI software running on operator workstations. In smaller SCADA
systems, the master computer may consist of one PC, in which case the HMI is
part of this computer.
Larger
SCADA systems
In larger SCADA systems, a master station may include
multiple HMIs hosted on client computers, multiple data collection servers,
distributed software applications, and disaster recovery sites. Lyskills provides online and free training Scada InTouch Project in Pakistan. To increase
system integrity, multiple servers will often be configured in a dual-redundant
or hot standby formation to provide continuous control and monitoring in the
event of a server failure or failure.
